Have shot your bolt (English) / Shoot your shot (Nigerian English)

“Have shot your bolt” is an expression which means using all one’s power, money or supplies.

The Nigerian version or phrase which is “shoot your shot” has evolved to mean ‘taking one’s chances’ implying to take risks or seize opportunities; to make most of a situation. The phrase has become a term for embracing risk and seizing opportunities. The phrase fits Nigeria’s cultural norms where risk-taking and resilience are valued; making the most of activities is encouraged. It is an exhortation to be bold, be proactive and pursue one’s goals.

The link in the two phrases lies in the shared idea of taking action and making the most of opportunities. In addition, both the English and Nigerian phrases use the ‘shot’ metaphor to imply a sense of finality or decisiveness; a sense of action or attempt.
