A hotelier invited fire servicemen to help stop the raging fire that was burning his hotel. Instead of telling them to ‘put out’ the fire, the hotelier ordered them to ‘put off’ the fire.
On hearing the surprise order, the servicemen left the scene and went back to their station. The servicemen understood the order to mean that they should postpone the fire fighting activity. The billionaire hotelier did not know that ‘put off’ means ‘to suspend or postpone.’
That was how the man lost his hotel to the raging fire.
